It was October last year when we were last away on a holiday… and we managed to get away then just by the skin of our teeth. While we were away Merseyside went into a high tier of COVID-19 restrictions so by the time we got home that was us staying put. Until now really… Things are slowly opening up and staying away in self catering accommodation is now on the list of things you can do so we were very grateful that Julie and Stuart offered us a stay in their Lodge in Endmoor.
We have stayed at the Lodge before and really love the location. It’s just a few miles from Kendal meaning access to the Lake District is easy peasy. And in the other direction you are soon in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s also just off the motorway and only 1.5 hours from home so it’s easily manageable for a weekend away. I was working at Sellafield during the week so I met Paul and Stella there on Friday afternoon. The weather on Saturday was a little wet (understatement of the blog) but true to the forecast so it wasn’t unexpected. It ended up being a bit of a lazy one for us and in the interests of staying dry enjoying some R and R we didn’t leave the site.
On Sunday we drove to a village called Staveley and walked around Potter Fell and past two reservoirs called Gurnal Dubs and Potter Tarn. We stopped at Potter Tarn for lunch and some very wet ball play which was enjoyed by all. We walked back into Staveley along the River Kent on the Dales Way. I was very fortunate that Staveley had a lovely little (open) ice cream shop called Kimi’s Gelato which Stella and I sampled and found to be very agreeable.
On Monday I was keen to go up Whitbarrow before heading for home. We had been up before when we did a long distance walk called That’s Lyth a few years ago with Denis but that was a wild day and the poor weather dominates my memory of the walk. But I do remember Whitbarrow and thinking it would be nice for a revisit at some point. This time we managed to do the walk before the rain came in and I think it’s safe to say we all enjoyed it much better the second time around!
So that was that. Our first trip away in about 7 months which involved a couple of lovely walks and a chilled out reset at the Lodge. Thank you Julie and Stuart!
