We discovered a new campsite last weekend when we went to Hawes Caravan Club Site in Yorkshire.  It was such a good campsite that we’ve already booked our next visit in August!  The campsite had excellent facilities with a very clean and spacious toilet block and the enclosed dog field was amazing for off lead time for Olaf.  We didn’t even get a chance to check out the games room which would definitely be a bonus on a wet day!  The site was located a 5 minute walk into the centre of Hawes with it’s shops, pubs and of course the Wensleydale Creamery.

The weather was good for the weekend too – a little showery on Saturday evening later on but it didn’t cause us any problems at all. It was warm enough to sit outside in the afternoon but not too hot in the van to sleep.

When we arrived in Hawes Friday mid day we had lunch in the very nice patio garden of the Wensleydale Creamery cafe followed by a little wander in the village including the first of my 3 visits to the ice cream parlour in the market hall…. I had Mint Oreo and Cookies and Cream on my first visit. (The second visit was for Biscoff and Banana and the last visit was to try the Ginger and Honeycomb flavours!)

On Saturday we took the Little White Community Bus to the next village along the Wensleydale valley called Bainbridge and walked back from there along the Cam Road – an original roman road – which was good walking and had very nice views across the valley.  We played a few games in the van that evening including Mastermind, Guillotine (which was a card game Emily leant us) and Battleships.

On Sunday we did a circular walk from Hawes to Hardraw waterfalls and stopped at the Green Dragon pub for a drink half way around.  It’s kind of neat that the pub was used as the interior of the pub in the television series All Creatures Great and Small.  It dates from the 13th century, with stone floors, open fires (which were burning away even in June) and beamed ceilings.  On Sunday evening our campsite neighbours passed some beef stir fry and almond shortbread over to us which was unexpected but very kind of them – and also very delicious so that was a nice treat!  Olaf got some venison sausage too! We had another go of Mastermind and were trying to remember our strategies from back when we played the game a lot and got quite good at it… which sadly wasn’t the case this weekend!

We left Monday morning after Olaf stretched his legs in the amazing enclosed dog walk area.  The campsite should really make a bigger deal about this in their advertising – it’s the best dog walk area I’ve seen at a campsite.

Unfortunately on the way home Frank the van behaved badly (again) and is having his brakes looked at this week.  Hopefully it’s nothing serious and we are back up and running for our next camping trip in July.  🤞

Here are some pictures from our weekend.  I do love our camping long weekends very much indeed.
