We managed another mostly dry camping weekend in Cumbria last weekend when we stayed at Pennine View Campsite in Kirkby Stephen.  We were really impressed with the site – great big pitches, clean modern facilities and all within an easy reach of the village of Kirkby Stephen with its shops, pubs and restaurants.

We arrived just about lunch time on Friday and headed to the cafe at a local farm shop for some food – which was tasty and the cafe was dog friendly too so all 3 of us were happy.  From there we went to the campsite to get set up and chill out in the sun.

On Saturday we took the bus to Warcop and walked back to Kirkby Stephen from there – via Brough Castle.  We timed the castle and Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour and Tearoom for lunch and I enjoyed scoop of Banana Chocolate Chip and Mint Chocolate Chip ice creams.  Yum yum.

On Sunday we headed out from the campsite with 9 Standards Rigg on the summit of Hartley Fell in our sights… and with a secondary objective of trying to get back to the campsite before the rain that was forecast came!  We managed to achieve both of our objectives and all 3 of us enjoyed the walk very much.  We did get heavy rain later on in the afternoon which sounded very loud hammering down on the van and we were very glad we were not walking in it!

On Monday morning before heading off we stopped at a local enclosed dog field and Olaf had the best time ever chasing his toy and also chasing after the swifts that keep flying over the field…

When the weekend had finished, we both agreed that the campsite warranted a revisit and that there was lots to do around there to keep us occupied for another weekend.  I’ll look forward to that…
