We stayed at one of the three log cabins at Parkgate Farm last weekend – it’s a small campsite with less than 10 touring pictures, 3 cabins, 5 static caravans and 1 pod and amazing views across Parkgate forest to Irton Pike.  The pitches are spread out so, despite the open views, it didn’t feel like other holiday makers were on top of you at all.  I thought it was a little gem of a find!

While we were there, unfortunately we witnessed one of our neighbour campers lose their entire tent trailer and awning to a fire.  It was rather scary how quickly it seemed to escalate from a bit of a smoke coming off the back of their trailer to it being completely engulfed in flames.  Thankfully everyone got out safely but it was definitely a lesson in the importance of maintenance of older camping units and the need to act quickly at the first sign of a problem… By the time we left the site a couple of days later,  the remainder of the charred tent trailer had been removed and the pitch had been re-turffed in preparation for the site’s busy summer camping season ahead.

The weather was reasonable on Saturday for our walk up Illgill Head – a little showery, not too hot, not too windy.  When we got up to height, we found ourselves in the clouds so there were no views to speak of but it was an exhilarating walk.  The next day we walked straight about of the cabin and around Muncaster Fell and the Eskdale valley.

Of course, while we were in the area we also had to take the opportunity to go for a walk on Drigg beach – it’s always quiet and you can walk for miles.  Olaf loves the beach and chasing anything that moves,  We also took the opportunity to take a trip into Wasdale and visit St. Olaf’s church where we got married.  It was Olaf’s first trip to the church that is his name sake so that’s worth noting!  We stayed for dinner at the Wasdale Head Inn which never seems to change and is always popular.

On the way up to the farm, we stopped for our lunch at Cafe Ambio just at the motorway in Kendal.  The cafe has a nice lunchtime menu and is dog friendly too so we were pleased that we’d made a discovery that we can add our list for future trips north!

Here are a few of the pictures from our stay.  See you again soon, Parkgate Farm!
