We had a camping weekend in Chirk which is on the Shropshire/North Wales border last weekend. It’s not far from home – an hour-ish – but I’d never been before… And we had some good advice about the Caravan Club Campsite there so we thought we’d check it out.
We arrived in the village Friday lunch time just in time to check out a really lovely local bistro for lunch. Afterwards we had a little wander around the village and got something from the butchers for dinner and some very delightful cakes (Biscoff Tiffin, Jammie Dodger Cookie Pie, Brookie and a Bakewell slice) from the Cake Kitchen which lasted us the weekend.
When we got to the campsite which was just on the edge of the village, we were pleased to find some excellent facilities and large, level pitches – our electricity cable didn’t quite reach the charging point for our first choice pitch but the pitch we ended up moving to was very nice anyways.
The next morning we set off on a walk taking in quite a lot of Offa’s Dyke National trail as well as paths along the Llangollen canal. We saw Chirk castle from afar and walked across Chirk Aqueduct and through Whitehouse canal tunnel (+400 metres long). There was a sweet and ice cream canal boat waiting for us when we crossed the aqueduct which was a nice surprise and needed to be taken advantage of. The circular walk took us back to the campsite and was almost 14 miles long in the end.
On Sunday morning we set off into the grounds of Chirk castle and again ended up walking on Offa’s Dyke. We got much closer to the castle this time and were able to appreciate it close up! It was an excellent mornings walk and we finished back at the campsite where we packed up the van and headed for home.
It is nice to know about such a well equipped, convenient campsite not far from home. We may very well go back again! Here are a couple of pictures from the weekend.
